Jacob L.
Jacob has been performing and instructing for over 15 years throughout the valley. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in jazz performance from ASU in 2011, where he had opportunities to perform alongside jazz giants like Benny Golson at the Jazz Showcase and received first place in ASU’s inaugural Jazz Composition Competition. Growing up in Tucson, he attended Arizona Jazz Academy (now Tucson Jazz Institute) where he performed at major jazz festivals across the US and Europe. He also earned a scholarship through Sedona Jazz on the Rocks to attend Berklee College of Music’s Five-week Music Performance Intensive program. His musical interests extend beyond jazz to include folk/fingerstyle, rock, funk, pop, and CCM genres leading to performances with various ensembles and local bands both locally and nationally.
As a songwriter and performer, Jacob has published original music through acts he has both led and supported as a sideman.
As an instructor, Jacob emphasizes the importance of fundamentals like note reading, rhythm counting, ear training, and music theory while incorporating songs that students enjoy. He also offers songwriting instruction for those interested in creating their own music. His structured-yet-flexible approach to lessons utilizes music software to create custom arrangements and notated versions of songs students pick, especially to tailor them to students’ needs and playing level. These tools also allow students to slow down recordings and adjust pitch, facilitating more effective practice and helping them reach their full potential. Jacob believes his students gain not only musical skills but also problem-solving abilities applicable beyond music. He teaches acoustic guitar, electric guitar, electric bass, and ukulele to students of all ages and skill levels.
